Decorating a room for triplets: this is how we did it!
Wendy Vuurens: "On October 1, 2020 our world suddenly changed. The ultrasound showed three beating hearts. We were thrilled about the pregnancy after a long fertility journey. We also have a 3.5 year old son. Okay, three more babies. Identical triplets: three identical girls! This means we had to buy everything three times. We were not going to organize the nursery straight away, as we still had to move to a new house, but I loved starting to fantasize about decorating''.
A hectic time
March 15, 2021: Liv, Evi & Zoé were born with 29+6 weeks of pregnancy. They spent almost 10 weeks in the hospital. The first weeks after coming home they slept in our bedroom, which gave us time to decorate their new room.
Nice and cozy in one room
Even though we have five bedrooms to choose from, we wanted the girls to all share one room.
Picking the furniture
I couldn't wait to finally start decorating the room after the move. We chose to keep our son's cot and to buy two more cots. We bought the two cots from a family with twins: white cots with wooden legs, very similar to our own cot. Yes, there are now two types of cots in the room, which probably is not ideal, but having to buy everything in threes was too expensive (especially given that we already had a lot of baby things ourselves). For now, it's fine though: we will have to replace a lot of items in a couple of years anyway. I like to make all three beds the same, to give a bit more peace to the room than to have everything in different colors. Little Dutch's textiles are so beautiful and of such good quality! Especially the color tones of Little Dutch fit perfectly with the atmosphere we want to create in the room.
We bought the changing table from a family with triplets. A beautiful wooden chest of drawers that fits with everything else in the room. We could paint it, but I think the wooden paneling is beautiful and calm.
The changing table is big enough to put two changing baskets on it and even then, there's plenty of room.
The space in the chest of drawers is especially nice. Four large drawers that fit a lot of clothes. I use a storage system in the drawers to keep everything organised.
The room has an alcove that can be perfectly used as a wardrobe. My husband made it himself. I just wanted it to be simple and practical. I like to hang clothes and so my only requirement was that a large part should consist of rods to use for coathangers.
The cabinet still needs to have a sliding door fitted. The delivery times are unfortunately very long these days. Plastic HEMA crates are ideal for storing the baby grows for example. You can label the crates with letters. For example, I put on baby grow S (short sleeve) and baby grow L (long sleeve). But I also have a crate with, among other things, bathing suits and sunglasses for instance.
A harmonious whole
In terms of color tones, we have chosen 'dusty pink'. The wallpaper is quite bold, but the pink colour tones make it look a bit calmer. Based on the wallpaper, we looked at what fits in terms of the color scheme. The blackout curtains also have a beautiful pink hue.
The beautiful Little Dutch rug in a natural shade with ocher yellow dots completes the whole room. The rug is large, which is very nice for a baby's room. We have chosen items from Little Dutch’s Wild Flower collection to spruce up the room a bit, such as the hanging lamp.
Storage space is important
I don't think a room for triplets is very different from furnishing a room for a single baby. You just have to be a bit more practical minded because you need more storage space. It was relatively easy for us because we had three girls. A multiple birth with a mix of boys and girls of course would be more difficult. I am very pleased with how we managed to create a beautiful, cozy but also serene room for our triplets.
Dotting the i
It's not quite finished yet, but it's coming on little by little. We have only just moved, so we have plenty of time to dot the i's and cross the t's. I still want a nice shelf somewhere. The girls have received very nice piggy banks that deserve a prominent place. And I also want nice accessories on the wall, but not too many as I want to avoid clutter.
In short, the girls have an amazing room!
