Product Questions Textile
We use the following fabrics and materials for our textile products:
- 100% cotton
- 100% quilted polyester
- Fabric strengthened with interfacing
- Polyester
Little Dutch textiles will guarantee high-quality products. In order to keep the products in good conditions, we have a few laundry tips:
- Wash the product separately the first time and select a cold programme.
- Carefully sort our products and other textile, depending on colour, fabric quality and care label.
- Use the correct amount of detergent.
- Anti-crease programmes, for items that contain synthetic fibres and/or that have anti-crease finishing: load the machine with only half of the weight you normally load into it.
- Select the correct programme and temperature.
- Once the laundry is done, remove it from the machine as soon as possible. This prevents colour-run.
- Please keep in mind that if you use a tumble-dryer, the textile should be able to tumble properly. Overloading your machine can lead to excessive creasing.
- Our products and other textile can best be washed and ironed inside out. This way you will not get faded stripes.
Our textile products are free from harmful substances.
As our sheets, blankets and sleeping bags come into direct contact with the skin, more stringent rules apply for anti-allergic properties. Our products comply with these strict rules, so you can tuck you child in under our bed linnen without having to worry about their safety.
Little Dutch's blankets, sheets and sleeping bags have a very good air permeability. The TOG rating of the Pure & Soft blankets is 2,1.
You can find more information on TOG ratings hereafter.
A TOG rating is an indication of the insulation of textile products. The higher the TOG rating, the higher the thermal resistance and insulation of the material.
Average TOG rating for bedding in the nursery
0.5 TOG - room temperature: above 26 °C (only use a nappy)
1.0 TOG - room temperature: 23-24 °C (nappy with sheet or nappy with a onesie)
2.0 TOG - room temperature: 20-22 °C (baby blanket with sheet, and a onesie if you like)
2.5 TOG - room temperature: 16-19 °C (sleeping bag, baby blanket with sheet or cover, and a onesie if you like)
Why are TOG ratings that important for a baby?
Thermal stress in newborns is a scientifically proven risk of SIDS (cot death). This is why it is very important to not to cover and dress your child in too many layers of clothes or bedding. In addition to the greater risk of thermal stress, a raised temperature also causes restlessness and sleeping problems.
Materials
It makes no difference which materials you choose for the nursery. Both natural and synthetic bedding is suitable for covering and dressing a baby. If you know the TOG rating of the bedding and the room temperature, you can determine whether the baby is not put to bed too warmly.
As every baby responds differently to covering and clothing, it is important to regularly check their neck and feet to see if they are still comfortable (skin should not be clammy or cold). The weight of a blanket is also important when it comes to thermal stress. The heavier the blanket, the more thermal stress (and the less sleeping comfort). The TOG rating of a sheet or a duvet cover are practically the same (0.5 TOG).
How warm is 1 TOG?
A baby blanket has an average TOG rating of 1 to 2. An average duvet with loose filling (fibres) is approximately 8 TOG. Parents are often advised against using these duvets for babies and toddlers under the age of 2.
What is the TOG rating of a safe sleep comfort for a baby?
The TOG rating of a baby blanket or sleeping bag should be between 1 and max. 4 TOG, provided that the child’s body temperature is between 36.5 and 37.5 °C and the room temperature is between 18 and 20 °C.
The standard for a safe baby’s sleep comfort is 2.5 to 3 TOG at a room temperature of 18-20 °C.
A safe bassinet or cot has to comply with a number of requirements. Make sure you that tuck in the sheets and blankets tightly and that your baby is not feeling too warm. Do not use a duvet, a bumper or a pillow until your baby is two years old.

A sleeping bag ensures a comfortable night's sleep for your child. It prevents your child from rolling from back to tummy, climbing out of the bed and kicking off the bed linen.
Make absolutely sure the sleeping bag is not too big and fits your baby well. The armholes and neck should not be too wide. Make sure your child cannot slip down into the sleeping bag. The zip should open up from bottom to top, which makes it harder for your child to open up the sleeping bag.
When combining a Little Dutch winter sleeping bag (with sleeves) with pyjamas or a onesie, you may not have to add any other bedding. On warmer days, use the Little Dutch summer sleeping bag (without sleeves) and a sheet or a thin blanket that you tuck in tightly.
It is safe to use fleece or other synthetic blankets for your baby. Tests show that it does not really matter which material a blanket is made of; it is the thickness of the blanket that counts.
Wool, cotton and fleece each have their own specific qualities when it comes to air permeability, fluid regulation and thermal resistance.
Little Dutch blankets have gone through an appropriate testing process, which ensures that no harmful substances have been detected. Additionally, they have been tested for their air permeability. The test results concluded that they are safe to use for even the littlest ones.
